International Homeless Animals Day

Today is International Homeless Animals Day, which helps us reflect on ways we can reduce the number of homeless animals in our communities.

In Mississippi alone, over 73,000 animals are euthanized in shelters because there are not enough homes for them. Countless others die on the street. How can we ensure that every animal has a loving home?

1. Spay and Neuter. By getting your pets fixed, you ensure that they will not reproduce. Help friends, family and neighbors access low-cost services by handing out flyers and business cards, or having constructive conversations.

2. Microchip. A microchip is an affordable and permanent form of identification for your pet and can help them be returned to you if they are ever lost or separated from you due to a disaster or accident.  Microchips are just $25 at The Big Fix Clinic and include lifetime registration.

3. Adopt. If you are looking to add a pet to your family, adopt from a shelter. If you are looking for a specific breed or temperament, chances are that you'll be able to find your perfect match in a shelter dog! Stop by your local shelters or use a tool like Pet Finder to browse by breed, age, location and other variables. Not only does adoption save the life of a shelter animal, but it also makes room in the shelter, allowing for another animal to be rescued.
