Jackson Friends of the Animal Shelter is a group of volunteers who help the critters at the City of Jackson Animal Shelter.
Jackson Friends volunteers gave us some insight on their group and the amazing work they do:
History
Jackson Friends of the Animal Shelter was organized in 1995 to help the City of Jackson build a new city animal shelter. The group worked with former mayor Harvey Johnson and city leaders for years developing the plan. The old building was located on Jefferson Street and was quite deplorable. The goal was accomplished in 2006 with the construction of a new facility at 140 Outer Drive in Jackson near Hawkins Field. After the construction of the new shelter the mission of Jackson Friends changed to become the adoption partner with the city.
Dog Program
Jackson Friends currently works with the City of Jackson Animal Control to find loving homes for adoptable dogs at “the pound.” Dogs are temperament tested and made available for adoption at the shelter. Jackson Friends also places puppies and dogs in a limited number of foster homes. Adoptions hours on Sunday are 1 to 2:30. When adopted through Jackson Friends dogs get a free spay or neuter from several participating vets.
Cat Program
Jackson Friends works with City of Jackson Animal Control to find homes for the cats and kittens in the city shelter. Individuals can adopt directly from the pound. As many felines as can be accommodated are moved from the pound into foster homes to be raised in a loving environment. They are then adopted from the homes, from PetSmart stores in Jackson and Flowood, and at Petsense in Brandon.
Jackson Friends has a Barn Cat program. Kitties not docile enough for homes are fixed and vaccinated and placed in barn homes. For information text Kaarlon Mann - (601) 259-4254.
Adoption dogs and cats can be found on Petfinder and at the stores mentioned above. Jackson Friends also takes cats to community adoption events when possible.

The Dog Program always needs volunteers to walk and play with the dogs from 1 until 3 at the pound on Sunday afternoons. Foster homes for puppies and dogs are desperately needed. For more information contact Lyn Crawford at (601) 405-2437.
